Olaf's Warm Hugs Scented Playdough- Party Size!

Last week I told you guys about my daughter's super awesome 7th birthday party and one of the crafts that we did. I wanted to post about another craft that was done at the party and what was a big hit with the kids! Bridgette helped me step-by-step with this but we only had the already made playdough for the party. At the party the kids got to scent and color it. Want to know how to make it? Okay, okay I guess I will tell you!

I got the idea originally from The Prairie Homestead Blog. I did make a couple changes to it so that it was a bigger batch and I wanted to make it my own. Lets start with the ingredients that we need:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour (I got mine right from the dollar store)
  • 1 cup salt (also from the dollar store)
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 cups water
  • 4,5 tablespoons grapeseed oil (or any oil you have laying around)
  • Essential oil
  • Food coloring
First step that I did was put in all the dry ingredients together and mix them up. I put them right into the saucepan that I used to cook it.

After the dry ingredients are all mixed up then you add the wet ingredients. I did water first, then the grapeseed oil. After that you mix everything really well until it looks like a big soupy mess:

Easy enough right? I had my daughter mix up everything. Then after it's a big soupy mess you put it on medium heat right on the stove. I put mine on high heat at first and it cooked it way too quickly so medium was the way to go. You want to keep on stirring it until it forms into a ball. You will start to see the parts that get cooked. It kind of reminds me of pancake batter. After it is all cooked it will look like this:

Believe it or not I totally forgot to take a picture of what the big batch looked like so we had to quickly make a small batch. It wont look as dry as this because I accidentally overcooked it. Whoops. I found that if you do overcook it keep on adding water and grape seed oil to it. It helps keep it together so it doesn't break apart as easily. It is going to be very hot (that's why I called it Olaf's warm hugs playdough) but you want to take the just cooked mixture and put it on a plate to cool down. It will take about 30 minutes for it to cool down completely but you want to keep on checking on it. This makes around 5 cups of playdough.

Now comes the fun part, coloring and scenting it! The kids enjoyed this part. I have the neon food coloring set with green, blue, pink, and purple. I let each kid choose what color they wanted out of the batch. What I did to make it less messy and make their hands not as colored I made a little well in the middle of the playdough then put the coloring right in it.

I dropped the coloring right in the middle one drop at a time. After we did a drop we mixed it together and if it wasn't the shade we wanted we added another drop.

The kids loved to mix it together but some got a little antsy about it not turning automatically the color they wanted. I just told them to keep at it until it turned the right color. I would be lying if I said our hands didn't turn colors at all, because they did. It wasn't as bad though since the playdough got a lot of the color. Here is what Bridgette's and my hands looked like after mixing the purple:

See, not bad. For the blue playdough it only took two drops to turn into a good blue. For the purple it took about 4 drops. Just keep on doing it drop by drop until you get the right color you want. Next is the scenting part. I let the kids choose from peppermint or orange. Most choose the peppermint but a couple choose the orange. Different scents help with different things. Peppermint can help with focus, orange is calming (plus it works as an immune booster), but there are so many different Young Living scents that you can pick and choose from that help with different things.

The kids thought it was so cool that the playdough smelled good. I also made a well in the middle and put the drops right in it and told them to squish it together until it smelled good. With peppermint it only took a drop but with some lighter scents it can take more. I got little containers from the dollar store (they were 5 for a dollar) that I gave to each kid to put their playdough in. You can use just plain old tupperwear containers too.

This was so much fun for all of us. Bridgette loved this and she keeps on asking me to make more.

If you are looking for a fun craft to do at a party, or even just a fun craft to do with the kiddos, I suggest you try it out!

Party Size Elsa's Magic Snowballs (aka bath bombs)

This weekend I had a birthday party for my 7 year old. She loves the movie Frozen (what little girl doesn't?) so for her birthday party we went with the Frozen theme. Now that we have our new home I decided to throw it here and I invited her whole class. Lets just say there are 27 kids in her class, but since its close to Christmas I knew that all of them wouldn't be able to make it. There ended up being 7 that could come to the party plus my two nieces. Instead of playing games I came up with a couple crafts to do with the kids and based them around Frozen characters.

I will be posting the other ones but I wanted to start out with this one because its super easy to do and this was the first one that I prepared and takes a little more time to be ready. Being in the lemondropper group with Young Living Oils we pass around a lot of recipes. I needed to make a big batch of them so I looked at a couple recipes and decided to make up one by myself. This is for a huge batch of bath bombs, I think I made thirty in all and they were around an inch big. Okay so lets get started:

Ingredients

1 cup cornstarch
1 container (16 oz) of baking soda
1 3/4 containers of citric acid (7.5 oz containers)
1/2 cup oil (I used grape seed, and added some too)
Food coloring
Young Living Oil
Plastic Wrap

First thing you do is get a bowl. and put the cornstarch, baking soda, citric acid in it. Then you add the grape seed oil last. Your bowl will look like this:

Then you add some of your favorite oil. I chose Stress Away because I love the scent. I put around 6 drops of it because I just wanted a light scent. You can add how much ever you like to get your desired strength of scent.

Then you take a spoon (or your hands) and mix it together. You want it to be easily molded and it to kind of feel like the wet sand you would use to build a sand castle. I added a little bit more grape seed when I mixed it. Not more than a tablespoon though. It will be kind of clumpy and I am so sorry about the picture, photography is not my strong suit.

After that is mixed together you can still add some essential oil if its not strong enough for you. Next you add in the food coloring. I added one drop of blue (out of the neon package) and mixed it in. This time I used a spoon until it was mostly blue then I used my hands.

Now, you take some plastic wrap (saran wrap) and pull out around 4 inches of it and cut it. Then you cut that in half. I could not take a pic of this, I am sorry it was really hard to photograph. You want them to be square. Mine made good sized bath bombs but if you want smaller you can cut the plastic wrap into smaller sizes. You can use silicone molds too but this was a cheaper option that made it look like actual snowballs. You also have to keep it in the molds for 24 hours so this was easier for me. After you get the ball formed you grab your square of plastic wrap. Then you put the formed ball into the saran wrap, it will look like this:

Sorry about the super blurry picture. I am so glad that I didn't choose to be a photographer as a profession! After its in the middle you pull the sides up and twist the top. Then it will look like this:

After that I put them all in a bowl and let them sit for 24 hours. This is really important so that they have time to dry. I made enough for each kid to have 3 and have some to show how they work. I told the kids that Queen Elsa sent some magic snowballs. I then asked if they knew whey they were magic. I told them that these snowballs are not cold and had them feel one. Be careful because if they are squeezed to hard they will break apart. I had a glass container (dollar store) with water in it and after they all felt it I put the bath bomb into the water. They got a kick out of it fizzing and turning the water blue. I supplied them with little party favor bags to put them.

These were a huge hit. If you are looking for ideas for a Frozen birthday craft then give this a try! You can even do it on a rainy day and its so easy your kids can help!

DIY Dollar Store Fairy Costume

Okay, so I wanted to post this for Halloween. I may or may not be a couple months late doing this. Ooops sorry I have had a lot going on these past couple months but better late than never right? For Halloween I had Bridgette's costume taken care of and we got Eli's costume while he was still in my tummy. Thank you Babies-R-Us and your awesome sales! Emelia's I slacked on. Two out of three kids is okay right? That's more than 50%! Just kidding, kind of. We had a trunk or treat planned at our church and that day is when I was like "oh Emelia still needs a costume!" I do my best work under pressure and when I procrastinate so this is what I came up with.

Emelia had a beautiful dress that was ivory that my MIL bought for her to wear and she wears it to church. I saw it and thought that would make a beautiful dress to be a fall fairy with. After coming to that conclusion I decided to go to the dollar store and see what I could find. This is what I got:

I spent $4.24 at the dollar store and got these 4 items. Keep in mind I already had the cute little dress I just needed the fairy accessories. I started out with the crown. I took off the fuzzy purple bottom part so it looked like this:

After that I slowly started to pick apart the fall looking flower bunch I got and started to hot glue it to the crown:

I kept on just adding and adding flowers until it was to my liking. This is what my finished crown looked like:

After the crown I decided to work on the fairy wand. It was mostly to my liking already but I wanted to add the pretty fall flowers to it too. I started out by pulling apart a couple flowers:

Then after that I started to hot glue them to the middle of the wand until it was to my liking then I added it some little flowers to the hanging ribbon until I really liked how it looked:

After that I decided to make the wings. This is all easy but to me the wings were the easiest to do. I just took some flowers and put them in the middle of the wings like this:

Then to add a little pizzazz I added more flowers to the upper wings:

There you have it! That's all I needed to make a cute little fairy costume. This is what it looked like before I put it on my little Emelia:

I loved the way it turned out and I kept on getting compliments on how cute it looked on her. Plus I had my little dragon that the little fairy went perfectly with. Here is a pic of us on Halloween. Don't judge I have no make-up on:

If you are a procrastinator like I am or if you just want an easy affordable fairy Halloween costume for your little girl, well try this out.
